Music Projects

I'm putting this in here instead of the STO or Pony forums because it touches on both the Fleet and MLP.

So, as a handful of you may know I mentioned before that I was dabbling in music creation to accompany the literary projects I've been working on lately. You know, tracks that can be linked to certain points in a story to add to the overall mood and invoke a stronger emotional reaction from the reader. I've also been wanting to do this for video projects and with the topic of fleet promotion and general awesomeness floating around, I've set out to create a few music pieces for the fleet itself.

With this in mind, I've created a SoundCloud account and have uploaded both a sample of the work-in-progress Fleet Theme and samples of a larger WIP that will attempt to chronicle the entire story of Luna in music form, from her early years to her current incarnation. Eventually all the tracks will be consolidated into a single piece. Hopefully, I can get some feedback as to how everything sounds to ears other than mine and some suggestions, especially for the Fleet track. I'd like to even see about expanding beyond an opening theme song and develop themes for different classes/characters/settings. Maybe even move into video production as well. My software is currently very limited in what I can produce but I'm constantly searching for more, time permitting.

I haven't looked at the others yet, but I'm absolutely adoring the Fleet Arrangement.

I listen to a lot of music, don't have much music theory under my belt. It might be a WIP, but I think you definitely nailed it.

I'm really loving this Alicorn Battle. I think you've got the feeling of majesty portrayed really well, but with the subject matter I think it'll be hard to 'get it' in everyone's mind. Personally, I'm a huge fan of the battle music, I think it'd be amazing to see it used for some sort of space battle, heh :3

I wonder if some of this might go well with lo'mesh's fanfic as well. Fantastic music by the way.

I'd be more than happy to try and make something specifically for Lo'mesh if such was desired.

I've gotten my hooves on two more software addons for my music program, so hopefully I'll be adding some more variety to the samples over the next few weeks. It's my goal to work on fleet and music projects in the evenings while at home and literary projects in-between tasks during the day and on the weekends.

UESF Theme

Okay, so the link above isn't a "finished" product by any means. I tinkered with the first one for a couple of hours and I'm liking the result enough to mark this one as the working piece for the basis of my future fleet music projects. If it meets with everypony's approval, of course. I've got another pair of software updates downloading right now that might even have the vocal patterns I'm looking for, so it would continue to improve over time.

Excellent (steeples fingers and laughs maniacally). Seriously though all humorous evil intentions aside this sounds fantastic I can't wait for the finished versions. Make us proud!

I think that we need another contest to spur LOTS of theme music. Get an official theme(well, that will probably just go to you anyhow) but get a whole slew of UESF music! Bundle it together! Make a collection!

Huzzah for music! And I sincerley hope there's somepony in the fleet that can put something together and totally show how much of a novice I am at this whole thing. Work doth call, but later tonight,....It. Is. On. I go!

UESF Theme

Here's a take two on the theme music. I didn't like the position of the brass pieces, so I switched a few around and altered the pitch in a few places. Added a very quick bit of chorus and I'm liking this one ever better now.

Next I'll see about some battle music and maybe some nice exploration/cruising pieces. If anyone has an idea, let me know and I'll see what I can cobble together.

That theme put a giant smile on my face

Glad you liked it. As I gain more experience and find more updates to my software, I'll keeping improving the approved pieces.

Now, for consideration, is the first sample of the fleet battle music I put together after posting the theme.

Fleet Battle

I've yet to capture that Trek "feel," but for now I hope a simple orchestral arrangement with suffice.

Would it be possible to mod the game client to incorporate this? lol

If you get winamp or itunes you can play music during the game and control it form in-game.

Time for constructive critism, all in the name of friendship, of course.

I like the general feel of the track, but it sounds too much like background music, as opposed to an actual theme. I'm thinking more along the lines of something like the Star Trek DS9 theme, with the original BSG theme, Hints of MLP-ness. Currently, it start too slow, and never reaches a solid, memorable climax.


Addendum Edit: I guess what I have in mind is a TV show-like opening theme. Imagine it the UESF was a TV show. How would you open it?
I think it's set up as a great launching pad to an actual "theme song." I wouldn't remove the song, as it makes great background music, but needs a little more...structure. The choice of instrument is great, and I like the the general feel you are going for.

Perfectly good points and thanks for taking the time. I actually have been getting the same feeling, as I listen to all the tracks on loop in my stateroom on the ship and make notes. I definitely want a more "TV show" feel and wholeheartedly invite anyone else who wishes to try to, please, blow these small attempts of mine out of water. Perhaps I should pull up the other Star Trek opening themes on YouTube and see what I glean for them. After that, then hopefully I'll have enough experience working with the program to add in some MLPness.

The previous track labeled UESF Theme has been designated as Assemble the Fleet!. I am in the process of designing another theme using TNG, DS9, and VOY as my guides. The Battle music is also being updated. Might not get samples uploaded tonight for those two. Probably have something by Sat.

Oh boy, now the pressure is on. Got a full evening out on Friday with my wardroom and a 0730 golf outing on Sunday. That leaves Saturday, provided I don't have a hangover from the previous night. Apparently, the place we're going specializes in a wide variety of fine whiskeys and scotch. I may be in trouble. Yay for self-imposed deadlines, because otherwise I'd never get anything finished.
